The
day to day itinerary described below is a sample of a typical cruise on the Hirondelle. However, on any one cruise, the moorings may change, there may be
fewer or more excursions, the places visited may vary depending on the season
and the passenger preferences. Because there are a limited number of passengers
on any of our vessels the guide can tailor the itinerary in accordance with the
passengers’ wishes.
Sunday –
Paris
to Besançon.
Depart
Paris, Gare de Lyon, on the TGV train in the afternoon. On arrival at
Dijon
station you are met by the Afloat in
France
guide who transfers you to where the
barge is moored beneath the King’s tower of the magnificent Citadelle. A
champagne reception gives you a chance to meet the crew. This evening the barge
remains in Besançon, giving you the opportunity to view this bustling city.
Monday - Visit Besançon Citadelle. Cruise to Osselle.
During
breakfast we leave Besançon. The cruise is quite spectacular as the barge sails
a short distance up the River Doubs before turning into the canal tunnel and
passing directly underneath the Citadelle. Emerging on the downstream side of
the town we begin our descent of the
Doubs
Valley
until reaching our first day’s destination near the sleepy town of
Osselle
. This afternoon, take a tour of
Vauban’s imposing Citadelle.
Tuesday - Cruise to Dole.
Visit Arbois region and Dole.
The
boat continues to cruise downstream, alternating between the river and sections
of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, which traverses the rugged Franche-Comté and
Jura regions. Today’s visits are to Arbois, the principal town of the Jura
wine producing region, and a walking tour of Dole, including the magnificent
cathedral and La Maison Pasteur, home of Louis Pasteur.
Wednesday - Cruise to
St. Jean
de Losne. Visit Beaune.
This
morning relax on board before taking a drive through the beautiful countryside
to the Relais & Chateau hotel at Levernois for lunch. Stroll around their
grounds before a short drive into Beaune to visit the Hospice de Beaune.
This evening’s mooring is at St. Jean de Losne, the barging capital of
France
. Take some time this evening or early
tomorrow to stroll around the port and see the many working and pleasure barges.
Thursday - Cruise to Fragnes. Visit Chateau de Rully.
This
morning, cruise south on the river Saône before entering the Canal du Centre.
The barge moors at the picturesque
village

Fragnes
. Visit the Château de Rully, where the
Countess de Ternay personally welcomes you on a tour of this medieval fortress.
Friday - Cruise to St.Léger. Visit Couches.
After
breakfast, your guide takes you to Chalon-sur-Saône where it is market day. The
hustle and bustle creates a wonderful atmosphere. A leisurely cruise to St Léger
allows you to savor the beauty of the French countryside and reflect on the
week’s events. Meanwhile the chef is preparing a feast for your farewell
dinner.
Saturday –
Dijon

Paris

After
breakfast disembark the barge and transfer to
Dijon
station. Board the TGV to Paris, Gare de
Lyon, where you are met by the Afloat in
France
representative who will assist you with your luggage.
