The Moselle Bicycle Path Traditions and Vineyards

Following the wine route along Germany's Moselle river

A bike tour along the Moselle offers everything that connoisseurs understand as a classical wine route. However, the Moselle Bicycle Path does not only let the heart of wine lovers swell, around every bend you will find a tempting landscape that radiates peace and beauty and splendid fortresses, monasteries and castles. These are the reasons for the Moselle being one of Europe’s most varied and marvellous river valleys.

                                                 ITINERARY:
Trier to Koblenz

1st Day:  Arrival in Trier

The starting point of your bike journey is Trier, Germany’s oldest city. Trier offers, besides numerous places of interest (an amphitheatre, Porta Negra, royal thermal springs, a basilica, town walls), a very rich cultural program

2nd Day: Trier – Trittenheim/surroundings, (approx. 35 km/22 mi)

The route leads either to the left or to the right of the Moselle, along its banks, through former Roman settlements and peaceful wine villages. Our destination of the day – Trittenheim – is located only a few wine villages further on. You can reach the old ferry towers over one of Moselle’s oldest bridges.

3rd Day: Trittenheim/surroundings – Zeltingen/Bemkastel-Kues, (approx. 35 km/22 mi)

The Moselle meanders through narrow loops between Eifel and Hunsrück. Passing Germany’s oldest wine town, Neumagen-Dhorn, you will reach the famous wine town, Bernkastel-Kues. A short trip to the paved market place, surrounded by half-timbered houses, with a view over the fortress ruins of Landshut that throne majestically over the town, is really worthwhile.

4th Day: Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues – Zell, (approx. 35 km/22 mi)

Numerous rich vine slopes make your heart happy and invite for wine tasting in a traditional atmosphere. You will pass rustic winegrowers’ villages on the Moselle bicycle path until you reach Enkirchen, the jewel of Moselle’s half-timbering architecture. Zell, one of the biggest wine growing towns on the Moselle, is our destination of the day.

5th Day: Zell – Treis-Karden, (approx. 50 km/31 mi)

Through Bullay, a former Roman settlement, you will reach a highlight of this tour, the town Bremm. The pretty houses front and hidden, narrow, curved alleys, with a view of the Calmond, Europe’s steepest vineyard, extend in a half-round along a Moselle curve. The view from the summit of the Calmond over the Moselle Valley is fantastic. Passing Beilstein you will reach Cochen, one of the main towns of the Moselle landscape, famous for its old part of town with imposing fortress grounds and the Reichsburg. Accommodation in Treis-Karden.

6th Day: Treis-Karden – Koblenz, (approx. 50 km/31 mi)

Today’s journey will take you directly to the Moselle bank to Moselkern. A small detour to the nearby fairy-tale castle, Eltz, is really worth while – with its numerous small towers, merlons, oriels and winded walls. The mediaeval town, Kobern-Gondorf, with its historic half-timbered buildings invites to linger. We continue between the Moselle and the steep vineyards through Winningen to Koblenz, the end point of your bike tour. The Moselle flows into the Rhine here at the Deutscahes Eck. The Romans as well as the Franconians and the French left their distinct traces on today’s townscape. You can end this day and the bike tour with an evening walk through the picturesque old part of town and along the well-kept Rhein grounds.

7th Day: Individual departure.
