ITINERARY
Get the perfect sampling of scenic riverside landscapes and
traditional German, Swiss, French and Dutch cities when you embark on this 5
night adventure along the legendary Rhine River. See castles nestled among
the lush hillsides overlooking the river's course. Once fortified
residences, they stand today as magical and historical reminders of days
past. Visit towns where fairytales were born and relive history as you
tour renowned sites including Cologne's remarkable Dom and the imposing
Heidelberg Castle. Experience carried cultures and time honored
traditions, and take a little of each as wonderful memories of your river
cruise.
Day 1 U.S.A. to Basel: Fly to Basel.
Day 2 Basel (D) Situated at the border of
France, Germany and Switzerland, Basel is the gateway to the Swiss Rhineland.
All three countries have had an influence on Basel, as is evidenced by its
history, traditions and old-town atmosphere. Its cobbled streets, 18th
century buildings and medieval gates are a reflection of that influence.
·
Embarkation
Day 3 Strasbourg (B, L, D) Bordering both Germany
and France, multicultural Strasbourg is the largest city in France’s Alsace
region. Time seems to stand still in the old streets of Petit France
where wooden houses and picturesque canals are common. The carefully restored
Cathedral of Notre Dame represents a variety of architectural styles and boasts
465-foot-tall graceful spires.
·
City tour & free time
Day 4 Heidelberg & Rüdesheim (B,
L, D) Founded in 1386, Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest educational
institution and is nestled among the city’s picturesque cobblestone streets
and red-roofed houses. Visit Heidelberg Castle, a magnificent red sandstone
building that dominates the city’s skyline from its hilltop location 330 feet
above the Neckar River.
·
Coach & walking tour; free
time
Half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets highlight Rüdesheim’s old-world
character. A fairytale-like town, it is the most famous of all Rhineland wine
villages. Enjoy local culture as you stroll along the celebrated Drosselgasse, a
pedestrian-only street lined with shops and taverns. Take this opportunity to
sample some local wines.
·
Mini-train & Music Museum tour
Day
5 Cologne (B, L, D) One of Germany’s oldest and
most honored cities, Cologne is considered the jewel of the Rhineland. While the
city was nearly destroyed during WWII, its 14th century gothic
cathedral remained unscathed. Representing the period’s supreme artistry, the
cathedral’s intricate and lacy twin steeples can be seen for miles along the
Rhine. While you’re conveniently docked in the center of town, your free time
allows for a walk to a local café or shopping in nearby stores.
·
Coach & walking tour; free time
Day 6 Amsterdam (B, L, D) Embark on a canal cruise
through this “Venice of the North” for a journey through Amsterdam’s
intricate canal system. Founded 800 years ago, the Netherlands’ cosmopolitan
capital is a cultural center boasting colorful gardens, lively markets and many
museums. During free time, visit Anne Frank’s House, relax in a café or see
the works of the Dutch Masters at the world-famous Rijksmuseum.
·
Canal cruise & free time
Day 7 Amsterdam (B)
